The Alyeska Resort is located in the historic mining town of Girdwood, about 30 miles south of Anchorage.
Believe it or not, Alyeska is the only proper ski resort in Alaska and it is world-class!
The resort is a destination – with a full-service hotel right at the base of the tram, with multiple dining options and an impressive spa all built-in. The town
of Girdwood is not far from the base – truth is, there isn’t much of a downtown, but there are 4-5 great restaurants and bars worth visiting.
The town and the base are at about 250ft above sea level, so altitude is not an issue. Perhaps most importantly, they get plastered by snow, with an average snowpack exceeding 650 inches on the mountain. (They hit 939 inches back in 2001!).
The terrain is varied and on-par with Jackson Hole: lots of advanced and intermediate terrain, but no shortage of terrain for beginners too.
(Do not fall for the misperception that Alaska is only for experts!)
They have a full rental-shop at the hotel, so you can rent skis there easily and reasonably priced. They also have a world-class ski school to give lessons
for anyone who wants them.
